Gina Teichert
Gina Teichert paints fractured fairy tales of the American West with a nod to the women who call it home. From her childhood on a working cattle ranch, to her career in the fashion industry, Teichert’s paintings dwell at the crossroads of the two worlds. For the genre bending artist, influences are wide ranging – Surrealism, Art Nouveau illustration, femme forward graphic novels, and sun drenched Americana lifted from her time modeling for brands like Stetson, Levi’s, and Harley Davidson.
Her work has been shown at de Young Museum, Springville Museum, the West Coast Biennial, and Coors Young Guns. Alaska Airlines acquired her piece Outerlands in 2018. It welcomes visitors to San Francisco International Airport Terminal 2.
Teichert now calls Napa County, California, home.
Artist Statement
Meditating on the theme of Wytches, I went deep into old sketchbooks, synthesizing several half baked ideas into my most powerful work to date. While I’ve always held a candle for David Lynch road trips and desert noir, this show offered an opportunity to consider personal mythology and press forward into stronger, more graphic territory than ever before.
Ad Vivum came from a collaboration with one of my favorite models (who happens to own a snake), and asks viewers to consider the multitudes of meaning packed into the word witch. Equilibrium, my first self portrait in nearly a decade, speaks to the process of coming into one’s own power as a woman who is not old but no longer young.
