MOTHER
Artist Statement
After agonizing over this piece and theme for weeks, I’ve realized that the only way I can approach the subject of “Mother” is by reverting back to Suprematist symbols. It is simply too vast and complex a concept to try to tackle artistically, otherwise. I write this, of course, as a non-representational artist and I can think of a million ways my brilliant figurative and conceptual artist friends could interpret their “Mother”.
For whatever reason, being a real life mother is a less intimidating experience than trying to approach the subject creatively. Now - back to the Suprematism.
According to K. Malevich, ‘To the Suprematist the visual phenomena of the objective world are, in themselves, meaningless; the significant thing is feeling’.
Chaos, Void, and a Hollow Square, in this instance, are merely symbols. They do not carry the negative meaning we may associate with them; they offer a space and permission to detach from the objective and feel whatever you - the viewer - feel about “Mother” as a concept or a state of being.
